Leveraging big data using SMAART informatics platform to address Sustainable Development Goals

Global challenges are becoming increasingly complex and interlinked in a rapidly evolving world. Innovative approaches are needed to improve the way that all sectors, including the UN system, responds and adapts to this changing environment. Some established methods do not fulfill all the needs required to accomplish the developmental goals and humanitarian responses- including data and information gaps. For example, a significant per cent of indicators for gender equality across the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) lack data and the invisibility of women and girls in national and international data systems remains a problem. Statistics that reflect the lived realities of women and men, girls and boys, are vital tools for monitoring progress and creating solutions to achieve gender equality and women’s empowerment. Join us for an expert talk on leveraging big data using SMAART informatic platforms to address SDG related challenges.

Dr. Ashish Joshi has an extensive experience of utilizing community based data to design, develop, implement and evaluate multifaceted technology enabled solutions to address challenges of the 21st century. Ashish will demonstrate how big data findings through research can address complex social determinants of population health problems especially among individuals living in poor or under resourced settings.

Ashish Joshi is an Associate Dean Student Affairs of the City University of New York Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy and founder of an Applied Research based organization “Foundation of Healthcare Technologies Society (www.fhts.ac.in)” located in India. Ashish blends his clinical medicine training with biomedical, public health, and informatics research.

He has successfully designed, developed and implemented interactive, mobile and internet enabled, multi-lingual, multifaceted technology enabled interventions globally across diverse settings. He has taught courses on operational research and population health informatics across and has published more than 100 research papers in high quality peer reviewed journals. He has used SMAART (Sustainable, Multisector, Accessible, Affordable, Reimbursable and Tailored) framework to leverage big data for addressing good health and well-being, poverty and gender equality in Asia. He will provide examples using case studies where technology has enabled to generate data to generate new knowledge for the diverse stakeholders.

He has harnessed big data using SMAART informatics framework to create meaningful information and generate new knowledge for informed policy making. He has emphasized on data driven, evidence-based implementation of programs, policies, and advocacy and discuss how big data can be used to;

  • Address Gender Equality in urban slums
  • Understand burden of Food insecurity in urban slums in Asia
  • Address health and nutrition well-being in urban slums

Ashish is an academician, researcher, mentor, administrator, innovator, entrepreneur and an inspirational speaker. He is primary author of the first recently published text book on Population Health Informatics: Driving evidence based solutions into practice” will also be discussed.
